The main reason why we want our Dobermans to have obedience training is for better communication.  Since humans don’t know how to puppy-talk or doggy-talk.  We teach our dog to realize our words and follow them.  These are some important commands we will be able to teach our dogs that is handy in everyday living.

“Leave it!”

This command is the most significant command since it will save you from suit.  This is when you would like your dog to put down something or divert his attention to something else.  Well, this is sort of hard.  If your Doberman is set to chasing a kid, Say ‘Leave it’; then restrain them or turn them around.  Ensure that you have diverted his attention to something else.  That will be you.  You may also use this command when you see your dog gnawing the newspaper, or ransacking the rubbish can.

“Sit”

When you teach your dog to sit, simply say “Sit” then push his back part with one hand while you pull the leash on your other hand.  Repeat the method till the dog responds without pushing his back.  Make efforts to reward your dog with food or praise when he is sitting.

“Stay”

Here, you may probably need another person to hold the little puppy while you command.  First is to inform your dog the “sit” command.  When he is seated, let him know “stay” and the second person will hold the puppy while you walk ten steps away from you.  You might hold up your hand while you assert the command in order for him to associate the hand gesture as “stay” command.  Repeat the method till the dog obeys but limit it to five times each day for your Doberman to endure it.

“Come”

Once your dog has learned the “Stay” command, simply tell your dog to “Come”.  If he does not, ask the second person to elbow the dog forward.  Make efforts to give him food treats or praise when he has reached you.  You may also train the “stay” and “come” command at the same time.

Tips:

During Doberman training, ensure you are consistent on your use of words and your rewards.  Never punish for mistakes but rather rewards.  This will motivate your Doberman to please you more than fear the training if it is associated with harm.  Always give rewards to each followed command or wanted result.  You may either use pats and praises or food treats as reward.  Don’t reward for messy performance, as it will lead on to sloppy obedience.
