Shooting my own family portrait…Help!?

I have a canon slr (film) t2. I want to take pictures of my husband, baby and I for christmas this weekend. I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for me as to what I can do with Natural Lighting (also, I hear that people get lights from home depot…any suggestions with that??), getting good Catchlights, and what kind of Props I can use. I have white and black seamless paper backdrops. I really would love for these to come out great. I have a 7month old little boy and really am trying to advoid going to sears. I am trying to learn more photography on my own but wanted some peoples professional opinion if possible. Thanks SO much to all who respond.

Find a park near your home, pack a picnic lunch, find a nice shady area and shoot away. A naturally posed picture outside with natural light will look more spontaneous. An overcast day will supply nice soft diffused light. If indoors find a north facing picture window and a reflector to soften the shadows on the other side of your family. Getting serene photos with 1000 degree halogen lights will be an exercise in futility the baby will fry and the heat will make the photo session short. You can’t beat the sun for natural lookin light.
